Herbal Supplements-Too much of a good thing can be bad for you!

Image
Image Source: RCHM.co.uk Yes you read that correctly, even water can kill you and we don't mean drowning, we mean water is toxic if consumed in excess. This is a really important topic right now because so many are adding in supplements just because others do, but supplements are meant to bridge nutritional gaps, those therapeutic supplements are meant to cater to ailments with potent doses because food is insufficient. Herbal supplements are the biggest issue in our opinion, you really do have to be careful adding these in because they are medicinal too, many herbal remedies have been carefully formulated and/or have strict dosage guidelines. Herbal supplements can also interrupt medications that have been prescribed by vets, or improve their bioavailability and increase the risk of side effects too. We're not trying to slam herbal remedies as we are great advocates of them, but they have to be used correctly, for example: Turmeric is used in medicine for it's anti-infla...

Pet Foods- Fortified with synthetics for survival

Image
Firstly, Thank you for taking the time to read this. This topic is something we don't talk about much any more because our usual audience already knows this so it's pointless us banging on about it. However, we thought we'd cover this just on the off chance that pet owners that stumble across this blog who don't know about it will find it useful and informative. To get started we'll touch on the history of pet foods and how it all evolved to the multi-billion £/$ industry it is today. Brief History  James Spratt was a "sparky" turned American entrepreneur who launched the first dog biscuit/cake, in the year of 1860 in London. The "Meat Fibrine Dog Cake" (Patented) is where it all begun, the brainbox thought of this product after witnessing, what would of been Victorian street dogs, chowing down on Hardtack when he arrived at the Docks in Liverpool, England.  For those of you that don't know,  Hardtack is essentially a cracker, high in carbs i...

Chicken and Rice- Yes or No?

Image
Here at Pawfect Nutrition, we'll probably contradict most veterinary guidance, and there's a great reason for it, although we DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO REPLACE YOUR VETS GUIDANCE. This topic has been covered by many, many with the same stance as us but we thought we'd add our two pennies anyway. As most of you know, the vets generic fall back for a sick dog, regardless of what's occurring is "Chicken and Rice" the idea behind this is because its a bland meal providing sufficient energy and the starch can help "settle" the stomach, rice can also "soak up" excess stomach acid too, the chicken provides much needed protein. Rice is one of the worst things you could feed to a dog, never mind a sick dog especially white rice,  It's been proven that dogs don't need carbohydrates, which is why carb content on pet foods is never listed, but if you work it out for yourself, dry foods specifically are on average 50% carbs.  Considering they don...

Our Natural Flea/Tick and Worm prevention methods

Image
This is common topic that comes up all the time when people switch to fresh foods, they usually also jump to a holistic mindset and reduce chemical exposure too. So we thought we'd share our methods, although we will add a disclaimer that it's not 100% effective and geographical location+ diet can influence the efficacy of this. Flea/Tick This one's simple , we use Garlic dietary and a homemade spray for topical use (sprayed on fur) consisting of 50/50 organic apple cider vinegar and bottled water, you can also add crushed garlic or lemon grass too. Direction of use for garlic: Slice it and let it oxidise for 15 mins, when oxygen activates the enzyme  alliinase , it converts the alliin into allicin , this is the antiparasitic compound you need, however you need to give garlic daily, it takes 6weeks+ of daily use for its intended efficacy, this allows the allicin to build up and influence the blood, this deters fleas and tics when they bite. Dosage:  Use 1 clove per 10kg ...
